Tour (2 days):
We will leave Purpose Driven Tours at 8:00am and we always ask you to arrive 20 minutes before departure time in order to pack necessary gear for the hike. After we welcome you and introduce ourselves and the Purpose Driven Tours mission, we will make our way via private transportation through rural and outer Leon to the Nature Reserve at Cerro Negro (1 hour). Once there, we will stop to look at Cerro Negro models and maps at the Welcome Center before beginning the hike up Cerro Negro. This is a great time to ask any questions and last time to use the restroom. The hike will take anywhere between 45 and 60 minutes. When we reach the top of the volcano we will have time to admire the breathtaking view of the surrounding volcanoes and communities. Then we prepare for our decent! There are two options to choose from: walking/running or sliding down on a board. If you chose boarding, we will give you all equipment and information to ensure your safety. Once everyone has descended, we will head back to the Welcome Center and enjoy a free refreshment where we can eat lunch together and reminisce together over the unforgettable experience of Volcano Boarding!
From the Welcome Center of the Nature Reserve we will begin our ascent of Las Pilas volcano which we must climb in order to reach El Hoyo volcano. The first hour of this hike requires a lot of determination and stamina from hikers; it is steep and you are exposed to the sun, but we are always willing to pause for water and resting. We want to go at a comfortable pace for everyone going on the tour. The remaining 3 hours of our ascent becomes flatter and there is more tree cover that provides shade. We should summit the volcano around 5:00pm. Here we will take a break to pitch the tents before taking the time to explore the area and surrounding views of Lake Asososca, Momotombo and more. Our guides will provide basic information as to how volcanoes work and what causes their formation and eruption. We will watch the sunset together before returning to camp to light a camp fire and make dinner. Eating under the moonlight is always a treat before bedtime. We will need the rest for the next day as we will wake up early for the sunrise. We will begin our descent to the lake. This takes about 4 hours but once we get to the lake we can take up to 3 hours to relax, swim, eat lunch and just be outside. After the lake, only 40 minutes of walking follow and they are dedicated to getting to the highway where we will catch a bus to La Paz Centro where you can try the best quesillos of Nicaragua for only $1.50 or C$30. From there we make the final leg of our journey by bus. We will arrive back at Purpose Driven Tours around 3:00pm.
